Exercise Treadmill Stress Testing

An exercise treadmill stress test involves observing your cardiovascular function while you exercise for a modest time on a standard treadmill.

The purpose of the test is to evaluate your cardiovascular function, look for evidence of coronary blockages or disease, and to help optimize your medical treatment.

Although the appointment for this test may occupy up to one hour, the exercise test itself involves walking, then jogging, on a treadmill for approximately 6-12 minutes.

At the beginning of the test, ECG leads are attached to your chest, and you will be escorted onto the treadmill. You start exercising on the treadmill walking at a slow warm-up speed. The speed and incline of the treadmill are increased every 3 minutes until you become tired or have any significant symptoms, and then the exercise is stopped.

Your heart rate, rhythm, blood pressure, and ECG are monitored by your cardiologist throughout the test. After the exercise is stopped, you will be monitored for another 5 minutes during the cool-down period.

Immediately after the test your cardiologist will review the test results with you, and provide his conclusions and recommendations.
